my youngest son had open house last night. before we went, we were laying on my bed watching tv. he quietly says 'I'm scared about Simonsen ( his new school).' I swallowed, tried to be nonchalant and waited a few seconds before responding (my response is KEY in how he handles things) 'like WHAT makes you scared'. he shrugged his shoulders. okay...i didnt say anything for a few seconds and then finally i said 'new teachers?'. he shook his head no. okay. i waited a few more seconds and then asked 'new kids???'. he shook his head no...okay...waited waited and then finally he said ' its busy.' okay. so I got up from the bed..moved around the room...very casually i said 'this is where your breathing comes in good...when you feel nervous, scared or overwhelmed BREATHE..' he nodded so i continued ' always ask questions...talk to your teachers, ask for help' he nodded again. a few seconds later i said 'we always get through this dont we?'. he nodded and said 'yep'
now i'm nervous...

last night i struggled. with being a parent. parental decisions. between wanting to hold them tight but then knowing that i had to let them go. can i be honest here? okay. last night... i so wanted to say 'go ask your dad' so that he could tell them no. i hate being the bad guy ALL the time. their dad is in their lives but im the constant. the constant stablizer. the constant referee. the constant emailer. the constant bank. the constant taxi. the constant heart mender. the constant sounding board. the constant bully. the constant drill sergeant.
but i'm also the constant love and soft place to land. and that makes up for every little complaint i just laid out for you all. and then some.
